New Habitat Pond at the Garden!

We are happy to announce we will be starting the installation of a new habitat pond in July. The pond will be a small, low-maintenance, habitat pond to provide habitat for animals and beneficial insects, designed based on the experience from installing and maintaining such ponds at schools and private homes. Its size will be 2 feet deep, and about the size of your wingspan in diameter

The pond will provide a consistent source of water and reproductive habitat for garden friendly creatures, including frogs, toads, dragonflies and minnows. Live bearing native minnows will be added initially. They will be the only creatures actively added to the pond. They are not given food and will keep the water free of mosquito larva. They continuously breed and will naturally establish an optimum population. Dragonflies will naturally be attracted to the pond to breed. Adults dragonflies also eat mosquitoes. Dragonfly larva spend the first part of their lives in the water and are voracious predators of mosquito larva and other small pond insects. In the presence of the abundance of life energy that intersects with a habitat pond, humans connect more deeply to the environment and to the other creatures they see enjoying it with them.
